ELCA Disaster Response

Gloria Dei is a member congregtion of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  Our congregation and other ELCA congregations support ELCA Disaster Response as a ministry to persons in need after natural disasters like the earthquake in Haiti.  ELCA Disaster Rsponse works through congregations, church organizations, and other international relief organizations to provide necessities of life ffor persons affected by the disaster and support for relief workers.

Gloria Dei supports ELCA Disaster Response in at least three ways: the benevolence portion of its annual budget, special gifts (for example, SCRIP proceeds) and offerings, and the individual contributions of members through the ELCA.  For example, in response to the recent Haiti earthquake disaster, the congregation voted to add $2,000 to its annual benevolence budget for Haiti, SCRIP contributed $460 from it proceeds, and members have made special offerings of $195 directed to Haiti

We have provided links below  to ELCA Disaster Response and its news and contribution pages.  Gloria Dei encourages direct contributions to ELCA Disaster Response in part because administrative costs of ELCA International Disaster Response are paid for by the general benevolence of ELCA congregations, thus 100% of each gift goes directly and entirely to disaster relief on the ground in affected areas.

Other opportunities to help with these disasters:

  • Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will match donations by 50% for this cause.  If you are a Thrivent member and want to contribute through Thrivent, you can go to www.thrivent.com/helpinghaiti
  • Once the dust settles there will be need for repair and rebuilding assistance.  Bryan Englstrom will monitor needs and opportunities for us.  Contact him at bengstrom(a)new.rr.com.
  • Lutheran World Relief (LWR) provides health kits all over the world for disaster victims and refugees from repression and political violence.  Help us gather the materials for these kits. You can donate dark wash cloths and hand towels, wrapped bath-sized bars of soap, store-wrapped toothbrushes, sturdy combs, metal nail files and clippers, and band-aids (1/2" and 3/4").  Or you can contribute the cost of shipping (and the toothpaste added where the kits are assembled) which is $2.64 for each kit.  Contact Pastor Steve Graf (Church and Community Ministry) at scgraf(a)new.rr.com or Pastor Tabitha at pastortabitha@tds.net for more information.
  • ELCA "Good Gifts" is another way to assist disaster victims.  Aimed at helping once the immediate crisis has past and the sometimes long recovery begins.  For example, money gifts can provide a home clean-up kit, a bundle of roof shingles or box of nails, hardship grants for life essentials in the recover period, two-months supply of food, a camp experience to help a child's recovery from a disaster, or a new simple brick home.
